Vriendschapsbanden
Project for the entrance of a children's playground and youth centre
Straight and swinging lines guide the visitor through a long passageway covered on both sides with mosaic tiles. The design is inspired by the surrounding Amsterdam School architecture, with its characteristic long lines. The patterns refer to the friendship bracelets that children make for each other.
In the preparation phase of the project, local children designed their own friendship bracelets and teenagers could design their initials. The resulting 330 drawings were used in the final design. The art work was made using Sicis glass mosaic tiles.
Another key element of the project was a new iron entrance gate, which is also a contemporary take on the Amsterdam School, with its frequent use of decorative wrought ironwork.
